First Grade
- Science
Magnets
OBJECTIVE: will demonstrate students that magnets are only attracted to objects that are made up of iron, nickel, and cobalt.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Give your child two magnets and let him explore the magnetic attraction. Every magnet has a  positive and negative.
2. Help your child label the three plastic containers as “Strong Attraction,”  “Mild Attraction,” and “No Attraction.”  Explain that he’s going on a scavenger hunt to find things that are strongly attracted to the magnet, sort of attracted to it and not attracted at all.
3. Reconvene and ask:  What do you see in the different containers? Are there similarities or differences inside each container? What do the items in the “Strong Attraction” container have in common? What are those things made of?

MATERIALS:
- Magnets
